Thinking about neurotoxin for the first time?

Maybe it is the "11" lines between your brows that make you look upset when you are not. Maybe it is the forehead lines that show up in every photo. If you have been curious about neurotoxin but have a few questions (or a few nerves), you are in good company. Here is what to know before your first appointment, in plain English.

What neurotoxin does (and what it does not do)

Neuromodulator injections are the treatment category that includes products like Botox, Dysport and Jeuveau. They temporarily relax the small facial muscles that create dynamic wrinkles, the lines that form when you make an expression, like frowning, raising your brows or squinting.

  • It softens movement lines. Common areas are forehead lines, crow's feet and the frown lines between the brows.
  • It is not a filler. Neurotoxin relaxes muscle activity. It does not add volume.
  • It does not have to look "frozen." At cosmetic doses, the goal is softer lines while your face still moves and looks like you. A frozen look is usually a sign of over-treatment, not the treatment itself.

Your first appointment, step by step

1. Consultation

Your provider watches how your face moves, talks with you about which lines bother you, and reviews your health history and medications. Dosing is individualized to your muscles and your goals, not a one-size-fits-all number. Candidacy is decided at this visit.

2. Treatment

A series of tiny injections is placed in the targeted areas. Most people describe it as quick pinches. The injection part of the appointment typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

3. Right after

There is no planned downtime, and most people go right back to their day. Small bumps at the injection sites usually settle within minutes to an hour. A small bruise is possible.

When you will see results

  • Days 3 to 5: initial softening often begins.
  • Around day 14: full results are commonly visible. This is a good time for a follow-up if your provider recommends one.
  • About 3 to 4 months: typical duration before muscle activity gradually returns.

Individual results vary. Planning for a holiday party or event? Book at least two weeks ahead, and three to four weeks if it is your first time, so there is room for your full result and any follow-up.

Tell your provider if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition, have had a reaction to a neurotoxin before, or take blood thinners or supplements that increase bruising. These can change whether or when treatment is right for you. Seek medical care right away for any trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing after treatment.

Simple aftercare

Your provider will give you aftercare instructions. They commonly include:

  • Stay upright for a few hours, and do not rub or massage the treated areas that day.
  • Skip hard workouts, saunas and hot yoga for the rest of the day.
  • Wear a high-quality mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide every day. A2 carries Marini Skin Solutions, including a mineral zinc sunscreen and medical-grade skin care to keep your skin looking its best between visits.

Good questions to ask at your consultation

  • Which of my lines are from movement, and which are from texture or sun damage?
  • How natural or soft a result should I aim for the first time?
  • When should I come back to check my result, and when would a touch-up make sense?
  • How long will it likely last for me, and how should I plan around events?
  • Is there anything in my health history or medications that changes the plan?

A good consultation should leave you feeling informed, not rushed. If neurotoxin is not the best fit for your concern, your provider will tell you.

Pairing neurotoxin with other treatments

Neurotoxin softens movement lines, but it does not change texture, tone or firmness. That is where treatments like Scarlet PRO RF microneedling and NOUVADerm laser resurfacing come in. Your provider can plan the timing if you want to combine them.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

Most people feel quick pinches that last a moment. The appointment is short.

Will people be able to tell?

The goal is that you look rested and refreshed, not "done." Your provider starts with your goals and your natural expressions.
