Two treatments with a similar name
Microneedling has become one of the most popular ways to refresh tired-looking skin. Then you hear about "RF microneedling" and wonder: is it just a fancier version of the same thing? Not quite. Both use tiny needles, but radiofrequency (RF) microneedling adds a second tool, controlled heat beneath the surface. Here is a plain-English look at how they compare, and how to tell which one fits your goals.
How regular microneedling works
Regular microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, uses a pen-style device with fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Your skin treats those channels as small injuries and responds by repairing itself, which includes making new collagen and elastin over the following weeks.
It is often used for mild texture concerns, early fine lines, enlarged-looking pores and a dull complexion. Because the needles work mostly near the surface, results are usually gradual and often build over a series of sessions.
How Scarlet PRO RF microneedling is different
Scarlet PRO is a short-pulse radiofrequency microneedling system. Ultra-fine, gold-plated needles reach a depth your provider chooses for your skin and treatment area, and then release short pulses of RF energy at the needle tips. That creates tiny, controlled heat zones below the surface, where collagen is made.
- Two triggers instead of one. The needling and the heat both signal the skin to renew collagen, which is why RF microneedling is often chosen when firmness and tightening are a goal, not just surface texture.
- Energy goes where it is aimed. Scarlet PRO focuses energy around each micro-needle, rather than heating the whole surface broadly.
- Consistent passes. A smooth robotic handpiece helps keep needle depth consistent, from delicate areas of the face to larger body areas.
- Face and body. It can be used on the face, neck and areas such as the abdomen or knees where skin feels loose or crepey.
Side-by-side: what each one is often used for
Regular microneedling may be a fit for
- Mild texture and early fine lines
- A brighter, smoother-looking complexion
- People who want a gentle starting point
Scarlet PRO RF microneedling may be a fit for
- Skin laxity: crepey or loose-looking skin on the face, neck or body
- Texture and the appearance of enlarged pores
- Acne scarring and other textural irregularities, usually over a series
- People who want tightening and texture improvement from the same treatment
Neither treatment is right for everyone. Your skin type, health history, medications and goals all matter, and candidacy is decided at your consultation.
What a Scarlet PRO treatment is like
Consultation
Your provider looks at the treatment area, asks about your goals and health history, and selects the depth and energy level for your skin. If another option would serve you better, such as NOUVADerm laser resurfacing for sun spots and uneven tone, your provider will tell you.
Treatment day
Topical numbing is available and commonly used for comfort. Most sessions take about 30 to 45 minutes.
Recovery
Mild redness for about 24 to 48 hours is typical, and most people return to normal activities the same day. You will get a simple aftercare plan with gentle skin care and daily sun protection.
Results
Some people notice early tightening within days, with continued improvement as collagen remodels over roughly 4 to 8 weeks. A series of 3 sessions, spaced about 4 weeks apart, is typically recommended. Individual results vary.
Protect your investment with Marini Skin Solutions
Freshly treated skin is more sensitive, and the Florida sun does not take a season off. We recommend a high-quality mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide every day, plus a hat and shade when you can.
A2 carries Marini Skin Solutions, including a mineral zinc sunscreen and medical-grade skin care. Your provider can recommend a routine to help prepare your skin before microneedling, support it during recovery and protect your results.
Tips before your first session
- Avoid tanning and self-tanner in the weeks before treatment.
- Tell your provider about all medications and skin products, especially retinoids or acne medications.
- Let your provider know if you get cold sores, so it can be planned for.
- Start wearing a mineral zinc sunscreen every day.
- Plan big events and photos at least a few days after a session.
Common questions
Does RF microneedling hurt more than regular microneedling?
Most patients tolerate Scarlet PRO well, and numbing cream is commonly used. Most people describe warmth and pressure.
Can I combine Scarlet PRO with other treatments?
Often, yes. Some patients pair it with neuromodulators for expression lines or with laser resurfacing for tone. Your provider will plan the timing.
